This intertidal zone is home to continual arrivals and departures, of disappearances and the reappeared. On the threshold of the land and the ocean, this intertidal zone exposes flotsam and scattered detritus, and it contains some of earth’s hardiest and most ancient plants and animals - organisms that are subject to the unpredictable forces of the weather, living things that routinely endure extreme fluctuations in temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, light, and space. Among them creeps the starfish - with an eye on each arm, a witness to several events at once.
LIAF is being realised along the shorelines of both the Western and Eastern regions of the Lofoten archipelago. Since October 2018, the biennale has been initiating a set of collaborations with several artists who will embark on a long-term engagement with the islands. The curatorial ‘arms’ of LIAF are both guiding and guided by these places, and by artistic ideas and processes, as the artists embed their respective work in the local settings. These engagements will shape a wider exhibition and public programme, running from 30 August until 29 September 2019.
LIAF is composed of five arms: ‘From the horse’s mouth’ is the arm that considers resilience, community, messages, and communication from human and other-than-human perspectives. ‘Thinking tide, sensing scale‘, draws attention to (natural) phenomena and the apparatus through which events are sensed and measured. ‘Splash, stress & elasticity’ is the arm that considers the high tides of human and non-human migration, seasonal tourism, competition, space, and cycles. ‘Maths, matter & body’ observes the relationships and tensions between the human body, solid matter, algorithms, gravity, and statistics. The fifth, unnamed arm, is dedicated to the unspecified.
The curatorial team of LIAF 2019 (Hilde Methi, Neal Cahoon, Karolin Tampere, and Torill Østby Haaland) are interested in the dynamic movements of the curatorial ‘arms’ as processes of continual revision and responsive re-conceptualisation, as directions that frame and shift focus, and as methodologies that foster energy, proximity, and poetics throughout the whole of the festival. The ‘artists-in-residence’ format - as part of, and in spite of the art biennale context - considers how this approach can provoke new affinities, knowledge, and empowering encounters that are invested in local agencies and place, and that connect to otherwise unreachable (local) communities, companions, and collaborators.

Susanne ChristensenSusanne Christensen is a critic and essayist currently based in Copenhagen. She has written for Norwegian newspapers such as Klassekampen and Morgenbladet. She was co-editor of Vagant from 2007 till 2010, a journal for which she is currently a columnist. She has published articles in many other journals and anthologies. Christensen writes about a wide variety of subjects within the cultural field, and has published books on contemporary avant garde thinking and feminist punk movements in Russia and North-America. She holds a Master’s in literature from the University of Bergen (2006).
Futurefarmers (Amy Franceschini and Lode Vranken)Futurefarmers is an international constellation of artists, activists, researchers, farmers and architects who work together to propose alternatives to the social, political and environmental organisation of space. Founded in 1995, Futurefarmers use various media to deconstruct systems, to visualise and understand their intrinsic logics, and to offer more sustainable alternatives. These include food systems, public transportation, and education. Amy Franceschini is the founder of Futurefarmers. She received her BFA from San Francisco State University in Photography and her MFA from Stanford University. Lode Vranken received his master’s in a UN Course on Human Settlements and Architectural Philosophy from the KU Leuven, Belgium. Amy Franceschini and Lode Vranken will be staying in Digermulen for several periods spanning from October 2018 to September 2019.
Signé LidenSigne Lidén (b. 1981) is an artist based in Bergen and Amsterdam. In her work she is interested in how places and their histories resonate; in memory, through narratives and various materials, as ideological manifestations and political territories. A main feature spanning through her projects is the aim to develop vocabularies for long-term experience. Her work encompasses sound installations, sculpture, video and performance, as well as documentary forms such as sound essays and archives. Lidén has an MA from the Academy of Arts in Bergen and graduated from the Nordic Sound Art MA program in 2012.
Trygve LuktvasslimoTrygve Luktvasslimo is an artist and filmmaker who has been based in Lofoten since 2016. The last few years he has been exploring human communication and search for meaning in a language where the absurd unfolds within cinematic and theatrical conventions. A central element in his work, is the way he plays with these conventions to point at how we are being seduced by different messages and truths in contemporary media society. With his visually striking films, he grapples with existential questions, while mixing the sombre with parody.
Luktvasslimo holds an MFA in Visual Art from Malmö Art Academy (2006). He will undertake a residency in his own home in Valberg, Lofoten for five months in autumn 2018 and in spring 2019.
Tricia MiddletonTricia Middleton lives and works in Montreal, Quebec. Her artistic practice involves the creation of large-scale installations, consisting of a variety of elements including loosely sewn silk and cotton fabrics, ceramics, painting and photography. She gathers, repurposes and mixes found objects with the handmade, as well as materials culled from nature, to explore the inherent potential, and to consider the possibility for feeling of these materials and the objects themselves. Her work attempts to engage the psychoanalytic technique of transference between human and material in order to facilitate insights into the sense encounters that occur around the extremes of aesthetic experience, from the abject to the sublime. In this way, deeper relationships between the animate and so-called inanimate are cultivated, in order to open up greater potentials for empathy between all forms currently in existence, or yet to arrive. Tricia Middleton attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design (1997) and completed her MFA at Concordia University (2005).
Kateřina ŠedáKateřina Šedá lives and works in Brno, Czech Republic. Her work consists of social projects and public actions where location, the quotidian and individual storytelling come into play. She often tries to create an exchange, or to encourage communication between people in their everyday spaces. Through her social investigation, she explores urban planning, everyday life and politics. Her projects have been realised both in the Czech Republic and internationally, and she has published more than thirty books and publications, mapping each project. Kateřina Šedá studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1999 to 2005.
João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre FerreiraJoão Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira live and work in Lisbon, where they have collaborated since 2004 on sculpture, photography, performance, exhibition and film projects. Themes in their work revolve around queer identities, construction of community, migration, and global capitalism. João Pedro Vale graduated in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, and studied at the Maumaus School. Nuno Alexandre Ferreira studied Sociology at Lisbon’s Universidade Nova. João Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira will be in residence on Skrova in March, April and May, 2019.
Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF) was first initiated in 1991, as a local art exhibition with a broad range of expressions and with a regional profile. From 1999, the festival was given an international profile changing the name to Lofoten International Art Festival, and since 2009, the festival has been run by The North Norwegian Art Center (NNKS) and LIAF’s artistic advisory board.
LIAF presents works by international artists in a local and site-specific context and seeks to be an open, experimental and including meeting place for artists, audience and locals. LIAF acknowledges the complexity of place and seeks to be a discursive, engaged and social platform for different positions creating dialogue between the local and global. The prospect of developing and discovering new knowledge and understanding through art is the core of the festival. LIAF is not connected to a permanent location or space, but is invented anew every time by infiltrating and moving into already existing structures: Everything from a garage, a library, a shed, a bunker, a fish drying rack, a private house, a shop or an old warehouse. New curators also develop the festival every time, with diverse backgrounds, ideas and practices and in different ways bringing the familiar and unfamiliar together. By insisting on this open and experimental approach, we believe LIAF can be a place for exchange and involvement on multitude levels, every time revealing new things about our world and ourselves.
